We recently asked our guides, what is the toughest climb in the Grand Tours?
Everybody was unanimous that a lot of the toughest climbs that they had 'enjoyed' were not featured in the Grand Tours. Reason being that the roads are either too narrow, too steep or too dangerous to not only take a race, but also the convoy of vehicles & all the spectators that follow.
Of the key climbs, it is the Mortirolo in Italy and Ventoux in France that received most recognition for the challenge both physical and mental.
The Mortirolo can be climbed from 3 sides, the toughest being from Mazzo. 14km of unrelenting strain. On most climbs, corners offer respite, but on the Mortirolo, it just gets steeper!
For the Ventoux it is about the weather. On the perfect day the 20+km is a challenge but no more so than Tourmalet or Galibier. Get a bad weather day and this all changes. Bad weather comes in the form of icy winds or baking heat. With a few kilometres to go you exit the tree line and the protection finishes. From there to the top is one of the toughest but most rewarding finishes to any climb.
What sits above else on your bucket list for intensity?
